Drawing in Front of Others"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">He wanted to play a song for us, but first he told us to get out of the room.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I was visiting a friend in Austin, TX.&nbsp; Her 5 year old son\u2013as passionate, brilliant, and tempestuous as any 5 year-old I\u2019ve ever met\u2013had seized on her red guitar.&nbsp; He\u2019d seen her start to play it as he emerged from his bedroom, and immediately wanted to play himself.&nbsp; So he sat in an armchair and told us to get out of the room as my friend set the guitar\u2013bigger than he was\u2013on his lap.&nbsp; He plucked at the strings as best he could, his little fingers sounding out notes by intuition, as my friend and I listened from the hallway.&nbsp; We\u2019d clap when he was done, but we were <em>not<\/em> allowed to look at him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"565\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/doartproductions.org\/staging\/2101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Chet-at-cortland-displaying-B_W.jpg?resize=1024%2C565\" alt=\"Chet at a workshop, pointing at whiteboard with picture of spongebob holding a banana. \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">All at once I found myself flashing back to the first time I\u2019d played piano.\u00a0 I was her son\u2019s age, or younger, visiting my grandma.\u00a0 She had an old upright piano in her living room, a well-loved piece of equipment that few people in my family could actually play.\u00a0 One of my earliest memories is of sitting on the piano bench, feeling the keys with my fingers, colliding notes much as my friend\u2019s son would do almost thirty years later\u2013not attempting to make anything like a \u201csong\u201d or even a melody.\u00a0 Rather, I\u2019d play a note, and then another note, and if the crash of the notes together awakened something in me I\u2019d try to recreate it, then again, and then again, until I got bored and started to feel around for some other collision of notes that would excite me.\u00a0 Then, when I found something I <em>really<\/em> like, I\u2019d call for my grandma in the other room.\u00a0 I wanted her to hear what I\u2019d done, I wanted her approval, but as with my friend\u2019s son she was <em>not<\/em> to actually watch me do it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Performer&#8217;s Jitters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Almost everyone who has to suddenly shift to making art in the privacy of one\u2019s own studio to producing art IN FRONT OF other people will probably understand the petulance of these two children.\u00a0 There is something that <em>happens<\/em> when other people enter our creative space.\u00a0 Words that once came easily to us suddenly fly out the window.\u00a0 Long-practiced movements become clunky.\u00a0 The freedom and sense of <em>power<\/em> we had when we were alone is replaced by insecurity, and if our eyes dare to look out to the crowd, even friendly eyes can suddenly appear distant and judgmental.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large prominent in music, a medium which lends itself naturally to performance, and where our efforts often fall short of the digitally-enhanced perfection we hear on the radio, and in our headphones.\u00a0 Years after my first encounter with piano, I would agonize in khaki pants and long-sleeve button down shirts when I would have to do a piano recital.\u00a0 In a church or nursing home, with all my teacher\u2019s other students, I\u2019d fidget in my seat and wait my turn.\u00a0 I envied the younger kids their easier pieces, and the older kids their seemingly impossible talent.\u00a0 Every step to the stage felt like an eternity.\u00a0 The piano itself seemed hostile to my intention.\u00a0 Why oh why hadn\u2019t I <em>practiced<\/em> more, I pleaded with myself.\u00a0 When I played, my fingers would jump disobediently, discovering new ways to make mistakes as I\u2019d start to sweat in my \u201cchurch clothes.\u201d\u00a0 I was <em>sure<\/em> that the audience was bored, or even annoyed, that they had to hear such a wretched performance.\u00a0 When it was over I scurried back to my seat, sure that the applause was merely polite and not something to take encouragement from.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Present Day: Whiteboard Drawing at the Cortland Illinois Lions Club<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Fast forward to the present day.\u00a0 Less than 2 weeks after my friend\u2019s son played us his budding masterpiece I found myself in front of a crowd at the Cortland, IL Lions Club.\u00a0 A group of young kids sat at a long table, watching me as I talked about INSPIRATION and the power of eyes to express emotion in comics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"693\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/doartproductions.org\/staging\/2101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Chet-inspiring-with-eyes-693x1024.jpg?resize=693%2C1024\" alt=\"Chet Drawing at the Cortland Lions Club, \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">But merely <em>talking<\/em> about art isn\u2019t enough.\u00a0 There are many good lecturers out there <em>talking <\/em>about art, about its history or the technical act of its creation.\u00a0 We at <a href=\"https:\/\/doartproductions.org\/about-2\/\">Do Art Productions<\/a>, though, want to capture art as it\u2019s being created, to encourage participants to get their hands dirty and engage with the process of making art.\u00a0 But in order to accomplish this I need to sacrifice my <em>own<\/em> insecurities as I face the crowd.\u00a0 I can see their minds begin to wander behind their eyes\u2013little kids here on a dreary autumn afternoon.\u00a0 I introduce myself, and begin to draw.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">What changed?\u00a0 How is it that that shy kid, the kid who once urged people out of eyeline before he\u2019d so much as play the piano is now actively <em>inviting<\/em> scrutiny from brutally honest children?\u00a0 Anybody who finds themselves suddenly swimming in adulthood will understand that, somewhere between the first stirrings of puberty and the whirlwind of late adolescence, our sense of awkwardness relaxes.\u00a0 It does this organically, almost insensibly, and so of course it does little good trying to explain it to kids at any age, who are caught up in the maelstroms of their own lives.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But it also comes from that dreaded word above, from <em>practice<\/em>.\u00a0 When I was young I hated practice, fought my parents over every moment practicing the piano as though it were an excruciating chore.\u00a0 Years of doing art, taking up the practice of writing and drawing as ends in themselves, has made it so I look forward to time spent drawing on the whiteboard, ironing out my mistakes before others can see them.\u00a0 Years of forging habits the hard way, through setbacks and momentary lapses in willpower, have made it so that I can retreat every late afternoon, to drawing and making comics, almost automatically.\u00a0 And years of watching my hands and my brain improve at drawing has reassured me that this practice is <em>not<\/em> wasted, that it will lead to progress that, when I look back on it, will be proof of the splendid power of the human mind (not just mine\u2013ANYBODY\u2019S!) to conquer seemingly insurmountable obstacles, and bring one\u2019s own version of beauty into the world.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What <em>Else<\/em>, Dear Artists, Can We Draw Together?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">As I turn an ordinary picture of SpongeBob into the \u201cwackiest version of SpongeBob you have <em>ever<\/em> seen,\u201d I see the kids\u2019 eyes watch me, delighted as I turn their suggestions into something visible.&nbsp; For a moment, the gap between the man and the child vanishes\u2013under the omnipresent performer\u2019s nerves I find myself engaged once more in a form of <em>play<\/em>, testing out forms and ideas on the whiteboard, seeking something that waits for me to make it visible as it lingers in the ethereal world of the imagination\u2013something that would not exist without me or without each and every one of the kids and parents looking at me.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">As a kid, it didn\u2019t occur to me that what I was playing on the piano was as much my grandmother\u2019s creation as my own\u2013a product of her imagination as well as mine.\u00a0 It makes for a strange kind of wisdom\u2013knowing that the product of our effort and imagination is valuable precisely <em>because<\/em> it can be shared.\u00a0 But that wisdom makes it worth the performer\u2019s nerves\u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stage_fright#Famous_people\">nerves<\/a> that, much as you hate them, are exhilarating in their own way.\u00a0 And with that wisdom comes an enticing question: What <em>else<\/em>, dear artists, can we make
